Count Tolstoi wrote his masterwork War and Peace fifty years after the Napoleonic Wars which wreaked havoc in Russia. How much time has to pass before Syrian writers are able to captivate in their literature the destruction in present-day Syria? And how will Syrian literature continue to exist when most of Syria’s writers live in exil? A journalist, a historian, a writer and a publisher - all four experts in their own right of Syria’s traumatic recent history - will discuss these questions.

Thomas Rueb
Dutch journalist Thomas Rueb (1987) is the author of Laura H., The Caliphate Girl from Zoetermeer, both an intimate portrait of a radicalized Dutch girl from a province town traveling to Syria and a report on desperate life within the Caliphate State. A fine blend of investigative journalism and storytelling.
الصحفي الهولندي توماس روب (1987) هو مؤلف كتاب لورا هـ. ، فتاة الخلافة من زوترمير ، وكلاهما صورة حميمة لفتاة هولندية متطرفة من هولندا تسافر إلى سوريا وتقرير عن الحياة اليائسة داخل دولة الخلافة. مزيج رائع من الصحافة الاستقصائية ورواية القصص.

Gulnar Hajou
Gulnar Hajou (1977) is a Syrian author and illustrator of children's books. She studied painting at the Fine Arts Department of the University of Damascus. Her work is translated into more than 10 languages and has won several international awards. At REORIENT Festival she will present her new book ‘Anne Frank & Me', drawings she made after quotations from Anne Frank’s diaries. She was inspired for this work after an 8-month stay at the Anne Frank apartment, nowadays serving as a residence for refugee artists.
جلنار حاجو (1977) مؤلفة ورسامة سورية لكتب الأطفال. درست الرسم في قسم الفنون الجميلة بجامعة دمشق. تُرجمت أعمالها إلى أكثر من 10 لغات وفازت بالعديد من الجوائز الدولية. في مهرجان ري أورينت، ستقدم كتابها الجديد آنا فرانك وأنا ، والرسومات التي رسمتها بعد اقتباسات من مذكرات آنا فرانك. استلهمت هذا العمل بعد قضاء 8 أشهر في شقة أنا فرانك ، والتي تُستخدم حاليًا كمسكن للفنانين.
Thaer Al-Zaazou
Thaer Al-Zaazou (1970) is a writer and journalist from Syria. He published five books on Arabic prose and poetry. His political articles are published in several Arabic newspapers. He belonged to the opposition in Syria and was arrested by the Assad regime. He left Syria in 2012 and is living in France since 2014.
ثائر الزعزوع (1970) كاتب وصحفي سوري. أصدر خمسة كتب في النثر والشعر العربي. مقالاته السياسية منشورة في عدة صحف عربية. وبسبب معارضته للنظام وانحيازه للثورة تم اعتقاله من قبل نظام الأسد. غادر سوريا عام 2012 ويعيش في فرنسا منذ 2014.

Uğur Üngör
Uğur Üngör (Erzincan, 1980) is a Dutch historian and professor of Holocaust Genocide Studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Institute for War Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD). He is coordinator of the Syrian Oral History Project, a research project that is documenting and investigating the experiences of Syrians with mass violence and violent conflict in Syria.
أوغور أنجور (Erzincan ، 1980) هو مؤرخ هولندي وأستاذ دراسات الإبادة الجماعية للهولوكوست بجامعة أمستردام (UvA) ومعهد دراسات الهولوكوست والإبادة الجماعية في الحرب (NIOD). وهو منسق مشروع التاريخ الشفوي السوري ، وهو مشروع بحثي يوثق ويبحث تجارب السوريين مع العنف الجماعي والصراع العنيف في سوريا.

Petra Stienen is an author and Arabist. She worked for many years as a diplomat in
the Middle East and Syria and published two books on the region.
